The
songs, the music and
the folklore which
have nourished the
passion of millions
of visitors to
Sorrento, “Land of
the Mermaids”,
throughout the years,
continue to enchant
them through the
magical atmosphere
and melodies which
can be enjoyed every
time that the
experienced local
artists give life to
the “Sorrento
Musical” at the
comfortable Tasso
Theatre situated in
the heart of the
native city of the
poet Torquato Tasso.
This show has been
catching the
attention of an ever
increasing number of
people over the last
few years, meeting
with the approval of
tour operators and
tourists alike.
Today its fame has
spread beyond
national boundaries.
The prestigious
American Smithsonian
Institute chose the
“Sorrento Musical”
as a unique
representation of
local Sorrentine
customs and way of
life. Earlier this
year, for the
launching of their
“Bellissima Campania
– Italy’s Southern
Jewel” Programme (presented
to the public in
Washington, U.S.A.,
on 25th April) the
show was assigned
the opening role
amongst a series of
world class
exhibition features.
It was not a purely
casual choice.
During the show,
which lasts about 75
minutes, the
spectators are
delighted by the
famous songs which
form the show’s
repertoire, such as
“Torna a Surriento”,
“O’ Marinariello”,
“Piscatore e
Pusilepo”, “Funiculi
Funiculą”, and are
charmed by the
eye-catching
theatrical scenery
which re-evokes the
natural beauty of
Sorrento, one of the
most appreciated
sights on the
international Grand
Tour. The scenery
which represents
Marina Grande,
Scutolo, the market
and other
picturesque corners
of Sorrento of
by-gone years is the
perfect backdrop to
the uplifting songs,
coloured costumes
and captivating
dances. At the end
of each performance
the audience is
overwhelmed by a
wave of emotions:
well-being and
euphoria,
light-headedness and
contentment. And it
is this mixture of
sensations which
will recur in the
months ahead every
time the visitor
relives the scenery,
the music and the
songs which are
unique to the
“Sorrento Musical”
show.
