From 2nd May, “Villa Fiorentino”
in Sorrento (also noted as the “Villa
fazzoletti” of Sorrento) is housing the
“Luce d’ Italia “ exhibition: an exhibition
of paintings by Silvestr Scedrin and his
contemporary russian artists.
The exhibition – commissioned by the
town of Sorrento, the Sorrento Foundation and the
Russian Cherry Woods Foundation as well as by the
curators of The Russian state Museum in St.
Petersburg – represents what is surely an
exceptional event.
Actually in the fantastic setting of the “Villa
Fiorentino” in Sorrento, about 100
paintings realised by Sil'vestr Scedrin
and his russian contemporaries will remain on
exhibition until the end of October 2007. |

To complete this sorrentine exhibition and
make it more interesting, there is also a collection of over
40 watercolours (on exhibition for the
first time), displayed in such a way as to invite the
visitor to delve into the golden age of the
sorrentine-amalfi coast and of Naples,
that of the great voyagers.
In this way the Sorrento Foundation
formalises to the best of its ability, its debut in the
field of promoting quality events destined
to improve and promote the image of Sorrento.

It was in fact the Sorrento Foundation,
directed at portraying their real function thanks to
manifestations of great cultural insight – amongst which,
to be exact, was inserted the one staged at
“Villa Fazzoletti” – and spectacular events
capable of attracting wide audiences and, more generally,
thanks to those types of activity which prove to be
useful for the economic and cultural growth of the town.
It was decided to begin with an exhibition
of undeniable artistic value which revived old links
between Italy and Russia,
whilst giving some attention to the possibility of
developing events which could be worthy in the field of
tourism.
In this sense, the exhibition at “Villa
Fiorentino” in Sorrento, offers a different
interpretation.
On the one hand we remember, in fact, that “the link
between Italy and Russia
has always been kept alive. In past centuries the
town of Sorrento was also chosen by the
Russian nobility for their great
voyages. The exiles, amongst whom Maxim Gor'Kij,
chose Sorrento, Capri and
Naples as their home”. This is like expressing
the desire to nurture, once again, the attentions of the
Russians towards the Land of the Sirens.
On the other hand however, the staging of the
exhibition at “Villa Fazzoletti” presents
itself as a significative and ulterior opportunity to
widen the range of attractions capable of drawing the
attention of a cultural tourism.
On the eve of the sorrentine exhibition,
an announcement was made specifying that: “This
exhibition is to be Sorrento’s homage to
Sil'vestr Scedrin, a sign of love and
recognition for having immortalised perspectives of its
landscape on canvas”.
