Unusual the town, unusual its patron saint. Because Sorrento, an enchanting town on the Gulf of Naples and a longed-for tourist destination, celebrates its Patron Saint on the same day in which another saint is celebrated, a much more famous one, that is St. Valentine.
On February 14th, Sorrento opens its cenebrations for one of the Christian festivities among the most felt ones by its inhabitants, that is the patronal festivity of St. Antonino the Abbey. An event which is cured in details every year, organized by the Municipality and by the Tourist Board of Sorrento.
St. Antonino the Abbey is told to have been a monk who, after the Archangel Michael's appearing and, by order of him, built a church in Sorrento, today known as Basilica of Sant'Antonino, among the artistic and architectural beauties of the town not to be missed. Dear to the population also for his numerous miracles, every year the patron is remembered with a series of delightful dates: from religious shows to those more profane such as illuminations, fireworks and a characteristic fair.
Suggestive is the believers' procession which takes place in the morning of the 14th of February: the silver statue of St. Antonino, kept in the Basilica which takes its name from the Saint, is marched past along the roads of the town centre, accompanied by a cortege where there are also representatives of the religious and civil authorities.
