The first edition of Sorrento Musical Meetings, which from 1984 took the name of Sorrento Musical Summer up to 2007, when it regained its original name, goes back to 1972.
The first time it occurred was in the same location which has housed it all these years, the Cloister of San Francesco, and was baptized by Fausto Zadra, the famous pianist dead in 2001 during the performance of a concert dedicated to Chopin.
Among the most important concert events in Campania, led for twenty years, from 1985 to 2005, by Maurizio Pierantonio's skilled Art Direction, it has housed, in the course of years, the most appreciated atists of the world panorama. It is enough to see the names of the artists who have populated the Sorrento event with music, to discover, for example, such important pianists as Maria Tipo, Martha Argerich, Aldo Ciccolini, Michele Campanella and Cristina Ortiz, or also solists as Byron Janis, Shura Cherkassky and Sergio Fiorentino. But the list would be too long to be written down; it is enough to remember that among solists, small and big ensembles, voices and musicians who have written the history of the Sorrento Musical Summer, there are the names of the most famous talents at a national and international level.
In 1993 the Festival received the reward of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, whilst from 1998 to 2005 it had the honorary Presidence of the violinist Uto Ughi.
Among the main cultural events of the year, the concert parade animating Sorrento from July to September, for its 36th edition, offered a series of dates also in the quarter Angri of the neighbouring village of Sant'Agnello. The show, in fact, has always been organized by the Tourist Board of Sorrento and Sant'Agnello, with the contribution of the Region Campania and Federalberghi Penisola Sorrentina.
Sorrento Musical Meetings: an event which reproposes and occurs again every year thanks to its evenings not to be missed, an incomparable series of artists from all over the world and a wide choice among classical, chamber, jazz music in a mixture of refined and everlasting proposals. |
