Caruso Prize: Sorrento in Music

In the name of the famous tenor from Campania Enrico Caruso, who lived the last few years of his life in the Mermaids’ town, every year the Caruso Prize is held in Sorrento; it awards a prize to an artist who distinguished himself in contributing to spread the Italian song and culture all over the world. The event, in which music has no boundaries, and that mixes various genres together, from the noble lyrical- classical tradition to the more modern one of pop- rock, represents something very special for the town of Sorrento and a great tourist attraction because the great tenor’s name has an international echo. The award is entitled to the memory of the tenor, who, more than any other, can be considered an icon of a noble and legendary Neapolitan being. In the sign of a contamination among different musical genres and the confrontation among different cultures, the awarded artist makes a duet and alternates with another foreign artist, as it happened in the past with Bocelli and Dionne Warwick, Dalla and Gilberto Gil. The prize proposes conventions, shows, debates and cultural exchanges with the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), the theatre – now art academy – where Caruso sang for the first time. The event is realized thanks to the Municipality of Sorrento and to the Sorrento Fondazione, with the sponsorship of the Tourism Councillor’s Office of the Region Campania and of the Tourist Board of Sorrento and Sant’Agnello and the cooperation of Sorrento Federalberghi. Every year, there is such an exceptional stage for the event as that of Marina Grande, which, thanks also to the sea, becomes a fantastic scenery where music and art find again and transmit an almost dream-like dimension. The “Caruso Prize – Torna a Surriento” was created by the idea of creating a moment of cultural and artistic exchange among artists from different countries, from the point of view of the contamination and the revival of musical language. Just in Sorrento songs like Torna a Surriento, Anema e Core, O’ Surdato Nammurato  were written, among the most famous ones respectively by the brothers De Curtis, Salvo D’Esposito, Aniello Califano. These songs were performed by several foreign singers, who have enriched them with their particular swings and sounds. In a symbolic way, these evergreen songs start from this town and get back mixed with other emotions; it is the case, for instance, of Anema e Core, interpreted by Dionne Warwick and Toquinho, with their unmistakable touch. In the course of years, such artists as Bocelli, Warwick, Dalla, Gilberto Gil, Noa and Massimo Ranieri have made duets and performed Neapolitan songs during the various editions of the Caruso Prize. It is a further moment of revival and reinterpretation of classical pieces which through other artists’ voices and their sonorities come to different musical dimensions. Not only Neapolitan music, but also great international musical masterpieces can be at the centre of this moment of contamination and dialogue represented by the Caruso Prize.
