How To Arrive
by Concetta Caccaviello

Sorrento has a strategic position which allows it to be easily reached either by car, train, bus, or by sea.
Travelling by car, driving along the motorway A 2 Rome-Naples for those who come from the north, or the A 16 Bari-Naples for those who come from the south, you get onto the A 3. Exiting at Castellammare of Stabia, you arrive to the SS Sorrentine 145 - that travelling alongside the sea - permits you to reach Sorrento. The SS 145 offers an extraordinary spectacle, and as you pass by the towns of Seiano, Meta, Piano of Sorrento and Saint Agnello, you can admire on the right, the sea that gently wets the coast, the beaches and the small fisherman piers; and on the left, the white rocks that - between Seiano and Meta - capture and reflect the rays of the sun transforming them into enchanting shades.
For people travelling by public transportation, there are various possibilities. If you arrive in Naples with the trains of the State railway (FS), the Central Station of Garibaldi Square is connected by underground passageways to the lines of the Circumvesuviana, which link directly Naples and Sorrento.
The trains depart every 30 minutes, and in a little more than an hour, you arrive in Sorrento. The updated timetables can be consulted on the site www.vesuviana.it.
People who arrive in Naples by plane have the possibility of using the daily bus connections, effected by the Curreri bus service. Every day, in fact, six trips are foreseen which connect Sorrento (Tasso Square) with the Capodichino Airport (Naples).
For people who want to reach Sorrento from Rome - avoiding the use of the trains - there is the possibility to take advantage of a bus which effects two daily trips and that in four hours, link directly, Rome (departure from Tiburtina station) and Sorrento (Tasso Square).
Sorrento can be easily reached also by sea, thanks to the hydrofoils that connect the Beverello Pier (Naples, opposite the Maschio Angioino) with the Harbour of Marina Piccola (small seashore) in Sorrento.
Upon arrival at the Sorrento Harbour you will find the yellow buses of the Circumvesuviana which connect the Harbour to Tasso Square in the centre of Sorrento; or if you prefer, you can have a relaxing walk that in 10 minutes, along a suggestive road with antique Roman paving and a long flight of stairs, leads you to Tasso Square.

How to reach Sorrento by plane - by car - by train - by sea

Sorrento is in the middle of a coastline that, besides a number of islands, offers plenty of magnificent places for their naturalistic and landscape value, as well as important historical sites . Not to forget the park around the most famous volcano in the world and the surronding nature. We are in one of the most appreciated areas in the world. World famous islands such as Capri and Ischia, with their exclusive athmosperes, their enchanting corners and the beautiful sea. Unforgettable places such as Positano, Amalfi and Ravello or the precious archeological sites extending from Baia to Herculaneum and Pompeii.

HOW TO GET TO SORRENTO BY PLANE:

The nearest airport to Sorrento, only 50 km far, is Capodichino www.gesac.it The airport is linked to the main Italian and European towns by different airlines that, often, propose interesting offers depending on the season of the year. From the airport there are different ways to get to Sorrento. The most comfortable and the cheapest as well, if available at your arrival time, is bus service by Curreri. The bus is just outside the arrival gate and for less than 5 euro takes you straight to Piazza Tasso, the main square of Sorrento and in good traffic condition it takes about one hour. Different solutions may be taxi or transfer services that the most agencies in Sorrento offer for a price between 70 and 100 Euro. From the airport there are also buses, taxi and shuttles to the Circumvesuviana rail station from where you can catch the local trains to Sorrento every half hour or to Beverello port from where you catch the hydrofoils and ferries to Sorrento. We suggest you to use these last transports only if you don't find any better solution as they are little comfortable and tiring.

HOW TO GET THERE BY TRAIN:

the train station Napoli Centrale Piazza Garibaldi of the State Rail www.trenitalia.com is linked to Sorrento by the Circumvesuviana local trains. As soon as you get to Napoli Centrale take the stairs to the underground and you'll get to the Circumvesuviana station.
The price of the ticket is about 2.60 Euro and you can buy it at the ticket strand or at some newsagent in the station.
The journey from Naples takes about one hour and depending on the time, can be more or less comfortable. The trains are infact often crowded but unluckly they represent the fastest and cheapest way to reach Sorrento.

HOW TO GET THERE BY CAR:

Any direction you are coming from take the highway to Naples. Follow the A3 to the Sorrentine Peninsula and take the Castellamare di Stabia exit. From Castellamare drive along the main road for about 23 km. You pass through the villages of Vico Equense, Sant'agnello as far as Sorrento, the last village you find.
The state road in the most touristic period, from June to September, can be stucked with traffic and sometimes it takes more than one hour to drive the 23 km from Castellamare to Sorrento.

HOW TO GET THERE BY SEA:

If you are in the town centre of Naples it can be very comfortable to reach Sorrento by sea. There are different hydrofoils and ferries linking Naples to Sorrento. Depending on the transport it takes about 40 minutes to get to Sorrento. The journey is more comfortable than the train one even if more expensive (about the double). The hydrofoils and the ferries get to the port of Sorrento that is about 500 mt far from the town centre. We suggest you to get to the centre by the shuttle buses you find in the little square.
